1/72 scale
|
Rareplanes - typical product from Gordon Stephens. Means a lot of work and use of the spares box. Anyway very rare to find these days.
Matchbox - quite crude by today's standards. Also has the problem of the wheel spats being moulded with the under carraige legs if building the 450 Sqn example.
Airfix - this was highly regarded at one stage because it has a bit more internal detail compared to the earlier Matchbox and Italeri kits. But there are known problems. The change of angle in the wing trailing edge is located in the wrong spot, being one rib out compared to the real thing. If you look at the boxtop I scanned for the top of the page, the strut that I arrowed in Yellow is completely spurious, not existing on the real thing. Also all struttery is very heavy. But if you want a figure of a crewman holding a large camera over the side, this is the kit for you.
Italeri - best of the older kits in my opinion. Has very fine raised panel lines which are easy to remove. All struts are much finer than in the Airfix kit.
Brengun - First of the recent kits (2-3 years old) this one is very disappointing as it is quite inaccurate. Scroll down the page at 'https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235110064-most-accurate-hs-123-and-126-in-172-scale/' for info on the Brengun and Sabre kits. Also more at 'https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235097055-172-sabrekits-henschel-hs-126b/'. While it does include the glider tug hitch, I don't recommend this one.
Sabrekits - this is the other of the recent kits. It appears to be quite accurate, being based on what is considered the best drawings that have been published and includes a lot of detail. On the sprue shots it appears to include the tropical filter. Boxings available from Metro Hobbies for $36.99 which is reasonable these days.
1/48 scale
There have been a surprisingly large number of 1/48 scale kits. To start with there was a Vacform (with some White metal details) from Air Press Models in 1984 (usual comments re Vacform models). Also two all resin kits from WSW Modellbau (don't know much about them) and Vector (from Russia) whose kits are usually very good. Both being resin however have the problem of it being a lot of work to cut the parts from the pouring blocks, and cannot be assembled with standard polystyrene cement.
Moving on we have a multi-media kit (Plastic sprue, Resin (cast), Whitemetal, Vacuformed) from FM (Fonderie Miniature) of France. Like most of their kits it would be able to be turned into a good model but will likely be a lot of work. BTW the 5F+CK airframe in their decals is not the airframe taken over by 450 Sqn but an earlier one from 1941.
Finally there is the kit that most of the people will build. ICM (several boxings, first released 2010) that was also reboxed later by Italeri. Now I have never looked closely at one (wrong scale !!) but knowing ICM it will be a very good kit.
Surprisingly there is no 1/32 scale kit listed on Scalemates. Just the right size for an enterprising manufacturer !!
Accessories
There are quite a large number of resin parts, decals etc available. See Scalemates for a listing.
